The Patience Virtue

July 18, 2010

When you see successful poker players in person or on television, the ones who consistently walk away from the tables with chips and wins usually have in common one extremely crucial quality. Well, that is patience. Here is how patience in poker is usually exhibited:

Card cashing is a no no. Even if sometimes it seems sometimes like the pros are doing this, it is in actuality all for show so that the pot will be fatter. To put it to you simple and plain, players who are always chasing will typically always go home broke.

Know when to raise and when not to. Always be sure to know the appropriate times to make their move. If you are confused, base it on the present feel of the table.

Players who are patient make the least mistakes. The difference between the player who walks away a winner and the one who walks away from the table a loser almost always comes down to being the player that made the least mistakes. And patience very much the key to making few mistakes.

Also, patient players don’t make it personal, vindictive, or focus on “getting back” at the guy in front of them. That is usually a bad idea. Silly mistakes are often made because of bravado and pride, and the real good poker players typically do not allow themselves to get caught up in this.

In connection to what I just stated previously, playing when emotional is stupid. When you get emotional it is a good time to leave the table, and if you are emotional to begin with, it’s a good idea not to show up at all. Listen, bad beats are inevitable. A mad player is a bad player.
